Building the Twins in a gritty, grainy, smoggy, malaise-era New York. March 1972. There are SO many details here. I've placed a lot of Flickr Notes on this rare archival view - many have a link to photos with more information. by Andy Blair

Neva Ever Easy says:
Rumor has it that two extremely tall towers once stood at the foot of Manhattan. Their names have been lost to time. As US Representative Ilhan Omar said "Some people did something" which caused the buildings to no longer exist. New York. Aug 1996 by Andy Blair

Neva Ever Easy says: When completed in 1972, 1 WTC became the tallest building on Earth, unseating the Empire State Building after a 40 year reign. 2 WTC became the second tallest building in the world when completed in 1973. The difference in height between the two towers was because of a Port Authority request to have two floors, the 43rd and the 67th, in 1 WTC raised, the lower of the taller floors being a cafeteria for PANY workers. 2 WTC did not need these facilities, so it remained 1,362 feet (415 m). Regardless, the WTC towers held the height record only briefly. As the building neared completion in 1973, work had already begun on Chicago's Sears Tower, which ultimately reached 1,450 feet (442 m). With the World Trade Center's destruction, the Empire State Building again became the tallest building in New York, after spending almost 30 years as the third-tallest in the city.To the firefighters of the FDNY, these two building were more commonly known by their assigned Fire Box Alarm Numbers: Tower One was Manhattan Box 8087Tower Two was Manhattan Box 8084.

Neva Ever Easy says: Windows on the World Restaurant - which opened in April 1976 was located in the North Tower on its 106th and 107th floors. The restaurant was developed by Joe Baum at a cost of more than $17 million. Aside from the main restaurant, two offshoots were located at the top of the North Tower: "Hors d'Oeuvrerie" (offered a Danish smorgasbord during the day and sushi in the evening) and "Cellar in the Sky" (a small wine bar). Windows on the World also had a wine school program run by Kevin Zraly. Windows on the World was closed following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Upon reopening in 1996, Hors d'Oeuvrerie and Cellar in the Sky were replaced with the "Greatest Bar on Earth" and "Wild Blue".In 2000, its last full year of operation, Windows on the World reported revenues of $37 million, making it the highest-grossing restaurant in the United States. The Skydive Restaurant, opened in 1976 on the 44th floor of the North Tower, was also operated by Windows on the World restaurant, but served only lunch. ( Excerpts from Wikipedia)

Neva Ever Easy says: The main dining room faced north and east, allowing guests to look out onto the skyline of Manhattan. The dress code required jackets for men and was strictly enforced; a man who arrived with a reservation but without a jacket was seated at the bar. A more intimate dining room, Wild Blue, was located on the south side of the restaurant. The kitchens and utility spaces for the restaurant were located on the 106th floor. Windows on the World closed after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, in which employee Wilfredo Mercado died. It underwent a US$25 million renovation and reopened in 1996. In 2000, its final full year of operation, it reported revenues of US$37 million, making it the highest-grossing restaurant in the United States. Executive Chef of Windows on the World included Philippe Feret of Brasserie Julien, and the last chef was Michael Lomonaco. ( Excerpts from Wikipedia)

Neva Ever Easy says: The Bar........................................................................... The Baroom extended along the south side of 1 World Trade Center as well as the corner over part of the east side. The bar's dress code was more relaxed and it had average prices. Looking out from the bar through the full length windows, one could see views of the southern tip of Manhattan, where the Hudson and East Rivers meet. In addition, one could see the Liberty State Park with Ellis Island and Staten Island with the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Neva Ever Easy says: The Brooklyn Bridge which in May 1987, I had the honor of climbing to the top of the West Tower as part of Confidence Training Session hosted by the NYCTAPD and its ES ( Emergency Service). At the time I was a member of SCPD Emergency Service Unit who wer cross training with our NYTAPD Brothers. I was a dream come true for me , having been born and raised in the Great Borough of Brooklyn. A day, whose memory will lie within me till my last breath.
