The Hitt Bridge, a graceful three-arch, single lane, 105-foot span with a high center arch was built by Silas Harry for John Weaver at a cost of $1,413.66. Samuel Hitt constructed a successful mill at this site, which functioned well into the 20th Century. It is also the location of earlier ford used by General Braddock in 1755,
In mid September of 1862 was also a key route to The Battle of Antietam.Then known as The Upper Bridge, a substantial portion of the Union army crossed this bridge on the night before the Battle of Antietam or on the day of the battle, Sept. 17, 1862. After the fighting, nearby houses and barns became makeshift hospitals, treating wounded soldiers from both sides.
There have been no major modifications aside from some repointing and additional concrete added to parapets.
