A Birthday Bear
“Posh, it is lots of sleeps, plus a few more, since I had my last birthday. I was thinking it must be my birthday soon… like today.” Said Sky looking at a selection of the birthday cards the bears kept.
“Mine must be sooner, my last birthday was so long ago I can’t remember it.” Said Bertie.
“You both have a little while to go yet. I think first it is your birthday, Bertie, and then just after it will be, Sky, to have his birthday.” Said Posh Bear.
“Are you saying that Bertie had his birthday yesterday then, Posh? If that is the case then it is my birthday today. Happy birthday to me.” Said Sky looking around him.
“No, Sky, it is not your birthday just yet. We have another birthday to celebrate first.” Explained Posh Bear.
“I do hope it isn’t Wellington’s birthday or we will have a party and Wellington will go on and on about all the battles he did not fight and how clever he was to avoid them. I don’t mind a few but according to Wellington there is at least several evenings worth to tell everyone about.” Said Sky.
“Well, it isn’t Wellington’s birthday yet either.” Said Posh Bear.
“I don’t feel as if it can be the birthday of Harrod, I am sure it was much warmer when he arrived.” Said Bertie.
“That is right, Bertie, long sunny days. I remember saying it was not fair as his birthday was much longer than mine.” Said Sky “Mine was dark for much of it.”
“It can’t be Barnaby, as he has only just arrived.” Said Bertie shaking his head and thinking hard.
“Is it your birthday Posh, or are you so old now you don’t have them any longer?” Asked Sky.
“No, Sky, it is not my birthday. Sky, it does not matter how old one becomes, it is still nice to have a birthday. I will give you good warning of my birthday so you can order extra honey.” Said Posh.
“I see, so it is not any bears birthday then?” said Bertie sadly.
“Not today, Bertie, but just two more sleeps and it will be Barnaby’s birthday. If you have an order placed, Sky, you will need to add more of everything as we will have a party.”
“I already have done, Posh, Ellie told me there was a party coming very soon. I even remembered to order more fish for Icecap. It is due this afternoon; but the man will be here so we need to catch the delivery hooman at the front door before the man hears them knocking.”
“Well done, Sky, I have now told every bear about the party except Barnaby, as I would like that to be a lovely surprise for him. He likes surprises.” Explained Posh Bear.
“Where is Barnaby? I was wondering that earlier.” Asked Bertie.
“He went out with the man on his two wheeled thingy in the back carrier, I think he said something about brushing his fur straight again as it became blown about outside.” Said Sky smiling.
“Good, but remember Sky, you must not tell Barnaby about his birthday party.” Said Posh Bear.
“Don’t worry, Posh, I am good at keeping secrets.”
Moments later Barnaby came to join the group and sat down on the blanket.
“Hiya everyone, I have been out with the man and I noticed there are a lot of pretties in flower and even some buzzy things. I like this time when the buzzy things come back from their sleep, the pretty garden things are in flower and I have my birthday party. It is so exciting I can’t wait.”
“How do you know about the birthday party, Barnaby?” Asked Sky.
“What birthday party, Sky?”
“The party you just said you were excited about.” Said Bertie.
“Well, I have one about this time as I said, so I thought I would put an order in for extra everything, especially fish for Icecap, so we could have a big party.”
“You added to the order, you say, Barnaby?” Asked Posh.
“Yes, Posh, it was funny because after I had done it, I spoke with Icecap and he had also ordered lots of extra fish and extra honey for Sky and me and all the other bears. He is such a thoughtful friend.”
“I think we may have over ordered then Posh.” Said Sky.
“That is not a problem, Sky, Ellie says we can always stash yummies in the ellicopter if we run out of room here. I will have a word when she wakes up next.” Said Barnaby.
“Thank you, Barnaby. We will have to see what comes and how much we can hide away and then how much we use at the not too secret birthday party.” Said Posh Bear.
