Another New Year...
“And so, another year begins.” Said Sky to his friends.
“Another year? What are you on about, Sky?” Asked Bertie.
“We have just started another year, Bertie.”
“Have we? I didn’t realise we had an old one. Who told you about this?”
“I heard the man say it, Bertie. He said have a happy new year to quite a few hoomans and even the odd bear so I understand.” Explained Sky.
“Interesting, I do wonder what a year is and how he lost the last one and where it went.” Said Barnaby looking confused.
“Me too, Barnaby, shall we look for it and see if we can find it?” Asked Bertie.
“No, I don’t think I will if you don’t mind. You see, I wouldn’t know what it was if I did find it and anyway, what would a bear do with it if one did have it in one’s paw or were even sitting on it? Rather careless of the man to lose the old one though.” Said Barnaby.
“I can understand what you are saying, Barnaby, I don’t think I’ll look either. Posh, do you know what a year is and what it looks like?”
“I almost know, Bertie, for it is a hooman thing. It is a space or period of time.” Explained Posh Bear.
“How did the man lose a space or period of time? It all seems very strange to me. One could lose a jar of honey, well I suppose that might be possible, but a space or period of time… that sounds strange to me.” Said Sky shaking his head in amazement.
“No, you do not understand, hoomans, allot a period, about 365 sleeps, and call it a year and once that space or period of time has passed, they start again. That is called a new year. They count each year as it arrives.” Explained Posh Bear.
“Posh, is 365 more than ten? If so, I am not taking any noticed as it becomes confusing for my bear brain.” Said Barnaby while looking at Sky for confirmation that he was asking a sensible question.
“I agree with Barnaby, I have never found any reason to count to more than ten.” Said Sky.
“What if you have more than ten items that you want to count, Sky?” Asked Posh Bear.
“Simple, I just count to ten and then begin again. So, I might have ten and two or three. Really Posh, I thought you could have worked that out yourself.” Said Sky shaking his head in dismay.
“Well, hoomans do not count like that, Sky. They count beyond ten, so this is year 2024, which is a lot of tens.” Explained Posh Bear.
“Posh, do you know where the man put the year he has lost?” Asked Bertie.
“I said, Bertie, the man didn’t lose the year. It came to an end and so they begin again? Last year was 2023 and so now this year is 2024.” Said Posh Bear wishing he hadn’t got involved in this conversation.
“Well, I’m still not going to look for this lost period or space of time, I didn’t lose it, and so it is not my fault it has gone.” Snapped Bertie.
“I agree with Bertie, I am not looking for it either.” Said Sky.
“Me neither, but I might if I knew what it looked like.” Added Barnaby.
“Anyone bear for honey?” Asked Posh Bear trying to change the subject.
“Good idea, Posh. It is as well we take more care of our honey than the man takes of his period or space of time or we would never have any honey at all.” Said Barnaby.
“Quite right, Barnaby. Come on, let us share a jar of Posh’s honey. You are very kind, Posh, thank you so much for we were wondering how we would get some honey, as we are all out, until it arrives later today.” Said Sky smiling happily.
