St Annes-on-the-Sea is a Victorian planned seaside town founded in the 1870s on former sand dunes near Lytham. It began with the building of a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne in 1873 and was officially named and developed as a resort town in 1875 by the St Annes on Sea Land and Building Company. The arrival of the railway and the construction of a pier in 1885 were key to its growth. Despite early financial difficulties, the town flourished with the support of investors and local benefactors, including the donation of Ashton Gardens as a public space. St Annes is characterized by its grid street layout and its identity as a Victorian seaside resort, with lasting historical connections.
