CAMP PENDLETON, CA. -- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2011 -- Scott Radetski, 49, a retired Navy Chaplain, SSgt. Justin Rettenberger, 31, and GySgt. Josue Magana, 32, both Marines, erect a cross on top of a mountain on Veterans Day that overlooks both the Pacific Ocean and the Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton. All three served during the battle for Fallouja in 2004, which saw heavy fighting. The cross was dedicated to the men they knew that were lost as well as others killed in action. That cross replaces the original cross that was carried up to the top in 2003 by 7 men, 3 of whom the new cross was put up to represent. The original was burned down in a wildfire so the new cross is treated with fire retardant. The new cross was built by Radetski in Washington state and he drove it to California in the back of his pickup truck. Rettenberger is the recipient of two purple hearts and Magana was shot by insurgents during the battle of Fallouja. ( Rick Loomis / Los Angeles Times )
