C6. "Diffusion Coupled Chemical Oscillators"

Recently Lin et al. have reported that the temporal behavior of the oscillating B-R chemical reaction displays an intriguing, small but reproducible, dependence upon the dimensions of the reaction vessel. This suggests that diffusional effects, while small, are not negligible for these fascinating oscillating chemical reactions. That observation has motivated this study, where we have explored diffusionally coupled oscillating B- Z reactions. They were implemented as shallow wells of circular cross section, machined into a thick Teflon sheet, and connected to each other via narrow channels of fixed width but varying lengths, and filled with the appropriate reactants of the B-Z reaction. Video macroscopy is used to record the spatiotemporal patterns that emerge. The videos are imported into Mathematica, where they are analyzed into their R,G,B components, and then exported into Logger Pro for further analysis. We will present our early results, and the methodology being developed to of the analysis.
