Gardening/Seed collecting

Collecting wild seeds, which were storable and high in protein, was a late Archaic practice. They paved the way for gardening. *** Gardening in MI began with squash. It was first grown for its nutritious seeds, pulp and rinds. The empty squash made handy containers. Domesticated sunflowers may also have been grown. Pottery was used to parch seeds for storage. In the North, wild rice became and important food.
