Berlin painter belly amphora 60 cm tall 490 BC figural decoration. God hermes and a satyr playing a barbaton. right hand holds a plectrum (pick). Lovely fawn sniffing upward for a drop of wine. Three overlapping figures. Back- single solitary satyr holding kanthoros with a stringed instrument. (lyre, kithara, barbiton) Barbaton. Berlin painter has one area in the middle of the picture with one or multiple. Much black background. Sometimes doesn’t put ground line underneath as if swimming. Major students were: Achilles painter, Providence Painter, Hermonax. Berlin was prolific painter. unlike earlier artists, we really have a good chunk of material associated with painter and his students. Thin features and developed foreshortened figure. Golden dilute with cute fawn and barbiton. Type A. belly amphora. handles flanged with ivy on outside. Type B cylindrical handles. Type C more plump or round.
