The Pillar on Fire
Sunset over the western seas from the mountain Suilven (The Pillar) in the far North West Highlands of Scotland.
My mate Andy (the photographer in shot to the right) and I had a 'wild' camp on top of the mountain after the weather forecast said perfect conditions, clear blue skies, light winds, temperature of 5C. The reality was different. Winds gusting to 50mph/80kph, freezing temperatures, and the cloud and mist soon rolled in until you couldn't see 10 yards/10 metres. It was a wild night. Suilven (pronounced Sooliven) is one of Scotland's most remote mountains: a 7 mile/11 km hike on rough tracks and peat bogs carrying 55lb/25kg packs then a very steep climb up the Bealach Mòr. My torn Achilles tendon (which the doctor said needed complete rest and no mountain climbs), is now a wee bit sore. No pain, no gain.
