Im Tierpark Berlin leben zwei Eisbärinnen - Tonja und ihre Tochter Hertha. Beide sind gleich groß, für Besucher sind sie nicht zu unterscheiden. Die Tierpfleger erkennen sie an der leicht unterschiedlichen Form der Schnauze. Dass Hertha nicht, wie es gängige Praxis ist, weil die Mütter ihren Nachwuchs irgendwann nicht mehr bei sich dulden, an einen anderen Zoo abgegeben werden konnte, liegt an einem folgenschweren Fehler, der lange vor ihrer Geburt gemacht wurde. Beide Elterntiere, Tonja und Wolodja, stammen aus dem Moskauer Zoo. Und dort wurde 10 Jahre nach Herthas Geburt festgestellt, dass Tonjas Papiere gleich nach der Geburt durch den Fehler eines Mitarbeiters vertauscht worden waren und Tonja und Wolodja in Wahrheit Geschwister sind. Hertha ist somit Ergebnis einer Inzucht und daher nicht für Zuchtzwecke geeignet. Ihr Vater Wolodja wurde an einen niederländischen Zoo abgegeben. Und nach einigen anfänglichen Rangeleien hat sich Mutter Tonja offenbar damit arrangiert, dass Hertha weiterhin bei ihr wohnt.

The zookeepers recognise them by the slightly different shape of their snouts. The fact that Hertha could not be given to another zoo, as is common practice because the mothers no longer tolerate their offspring at some point, is due to a serious mistake that was made long before she was born. Both parents, Tonja and Volodya, come from Moscow Zoo. And there, 10 years after Hertha's birth, it was discovered that Tonja's papers had been mixed up immediately after birth due to an employee's mistake and that Tonja and Volodya were in fact siblings. Hertha is therefore the result of inbreeding and not suitable for breeding purposes. Her father Volodya was given to a Dutch zoo. And after some initial scuffles, mum Tonja has apparently come to terms with the fact that Hertha continues to live with her.
Berlin boasts two zoological gardens, a consequence of decades of political and administrative division of the city. The older one, called Zoo Berlin, founded in 1844, is situated in what is now called the "City West". It is the most species-rich zoo worldwide. The other one, called Tierpark Berlin ("Berlin Animal Park"), was established on the long abandoned premises of Friedrichsfelde Manor Park in the eastern borough of Lichtenberg, in 1954. Covering 160 ha, it is the largest landcape zoo in Europe. In front of and behind the manor, the original design of the gardens was carefully restored. That is why you won't see any animals in this part of the enormous premises of the Animal Park. But you'll find plenty of them at a short distance.
