Die Marzahner Promenade ist eine in den späten 1980-er Jahren als Einkaufsstraße geplante und gebaute Fußgängermeile in der Mitte des Neubaugebiets Marzahn. Sie beginnt am S-Bahnhof Marzahn und endet am erst nach dem Ende der DDR fertiggestellten Freizeitforum Marzahn, dem wohl letzten Kulturbau der DDR, gegenüber dem historischen Dorfkern Alt-Marzahn. Dort, wo heute das moderne Einkaufszentrum Eastgate steht, standen zuvor Ende der 1980-er Jahre fertiggestellte Geschäftsbauten wie ein kleines Warenhaus, eine große Post, ein Dienstleistungszentrum und eine Bankfililale, die heutigen Ansprüchen nicht mehr genügten und daher abgerissen wurden, auch wenn sie architektonisch sehr ansprechend waren. Nur wenige Läden haben angesichts der starken Konkurrenz durch das Einkaufzentrum Eastage überlebt. Stattdessen zogen junge Künstler ein, denen die leeren Flächen als Ateliers angeboten wurden.
Marzahner Promenade is a pedestrian promenade planned and built in the late 1980s as a shopping street in the middle of the new development area of Marzahn. It begins at the Marzahn city railway station and ends opposite the historic village centre of Alt-Marzahn (Old Marzahn) at the Freizeitforum Marzahn. This large building whose name roughly can be translated with Centre of Recreational Activities is probably the last cultural building of the GDR, as it was only completed after the German Reunification. It comprises a children's and youth centre, an indoor swimming pool and other sports facilities, a public library, a theatre and a café with production on site, among others. Where the modern Eastgate shopping centre now stands, there were previously commercial buildings completed at the end of the 1980s, such as a small department stores', a large post office, a service centre and a bank branch, which no longer met today's requirements and were therefore demolished, even though they were architecturally very appealing. Despite many attempts at revitalising the local commerce, only few shops have survived in face of the strong competition constituted by the Eastgate shopping mall. And so quite a lot have been offered as ateliers to young artists.
