The Old Village lay directly on the edge of important medieval trade routes and was probably founded as a village settlement before 1116. Its structure was that of a settlement in which the houses were grouped to both sides of a central broad green space lined by the two lanes of a bifurcated road. This structure has been maintained up to the present. The village church once stood on the site of the present church of St. Jacobi. In the 12th century, the Old Village was owned by Margrave Albrecht the Bear.
