Im Jahr 1335 wurde das Schloss erstmals als Herrensitz und Rittergut erwähnt, 1694 erhielt es Kurfürst Johann Georg IV. im Tausch gegen das Schloss Lichtenwalde. Nach seinem Tod ging es an den Bruder – heute bekannt als August der Starke. Für zwei Jahre lebte dessen Mätresse Anna Constanta von Cosel in dem damaligen Renaissance-Schloss, das anschließend vor allem Platz für große Feste bot.
