MEC Plow Extra 567 West Washington Jct Calais Branch 02-08-78

Washington Junction was located approximately 32 miles East of Bangor on the Calais Branch and where the Bar Harbor Branch split off down to McNeil Points where patrons of the Bar Harbor Express would take the ferry service then operated by the Maine Central across Frenchmen's Bay about 6 miles to Bar Harbor and the Maine Central's pier which is the location of the town pier in Bar Harbor today. As one could imagine these trains were well patronized in the summer months with 7 inbounds daily and 6 outbound departures. By 1931 a highway bridge was built at Trenton connecting the island with the mainland and psgr service was cutback to Ellsworth.

In 1978 when this pictures was taken there was a wye still in service and some pulpwood loading took place here. Surprisingly this part of the Calais Branch remains in service operated by some excursion operator leasing a portion of the branch.
