USCGS Penobscot Bay Chopps Point Kennebec River _12

The recent January Thaw here in the frozen tundra has caused ice jams on the Kennebec River. The Coast Guard has dispatched the 140 foot Fairbanks Morse powered Penobscot Bay to open up the river to prevent possible further flooding. Here the Penobscot Bay is opening the area known locally as The Chopps. The ice was over 2 feet thick and with the jams it was up to 6 feet in depth. Tomorrow the Penobscot Bay and 3 65 footers will continue there journey up to Gardiner.
