Welcome Mary-Jane
This is a special doll for me, a very recent purchase. Mary-Jane is the first wooden doll in my collection, and the first handmade OOAK one. Technically, a rabbit and a teddy-bear preceded her, but I consider them a different category, animal toys/dolls.
The majority of my dolls are made of some kind of plastic or rubber, and I wanted a doll that would last. Of course I own a few porcellain dolls, and porcellain is durable, too, if handled with care, but carved wood is just so different as a material. It feels and looks and is perceived another way — as warm, solid, not easily broken, natural, more alive, and generally keeping the warmth of the hands that have carved it, and infused with the artist's inspiration.
Of course I value all my other dolls, too, but sometimes you want something very specific, and your attention hones in on it untill the need is satisfied. I had wanted a wooden doll for a long time, and it came to the point where I just couldn't look at any dolls made of some or other sort of clay, like Ladoll and so on. Most handmade dolls at doll fairs are like this.
Ideally, I wanted a fully wooden, realistic doll with the structure of the wood clearly seen. However, they are extremely rare, and I cannot imagine the price ✈️
Mary-Jane has wooden head, arms and legs, carefully painted over and covered with wax, and the rest of her body is stuffed with wooden shavings. If to think, the is an ideal one, for I wanted a tender girl that I could redress and take with me to doll fairs sometimes.
