Late 1970s Tire Sprue Board

I picked this demonstration board up when I went to Denmark last year. I was told that it was not put together by Lego, but that Lego sent tires, sprues*, and info as educational components to teachers at a manufacturing school, which then assembled them as shown. These may be some of the best-preserved sprues from this era that we have seen — and, my favorite, actual materials info!

The labels are in Danish, but translate roughly to:

[3740, 24x43]

1-piece mould

Category: TIRE

Material: Foamed PLC (pale latex crepe rubber)

[3483, D.x8mm]

8-piece mould

Category: TIRE

Material: Soft PVC

Inlets: 2 tunnels per piece

[3634, 17x43]

1-piece mould

Category: TIRE

Material: Soft PVC

Inlets: 4 tunnels per piece

This one took some detective work, since the tire itself was missing when i bought the board. I looked through the tires that came out around this era, and decided it must be this one, but most of them have the mould pips around the outside… finally Baraklava pulled one for me from the right era and, yep, four pips on the inner ring, fit the sprue perfectly :)

[3641, D. x 6mm]

10-piece mould

Category: TIRE

Material: Soft PVC

Inlets: 1 tunnel per piece

*well, runners and gates, not sprues exactly :)
