Westbourne, Dorset Methodist Church now a Tesco Express Store
This is a first for me. I have never seen a church turned into a retail store. I have seen Antique shops, private dwellings but not a front line store.
Situated in Poole Road, Westbourne, BH4 9DW. It was constituted in 1887 and opened in 1899. It was a Wesleyan Chapel with an active congregation and had many social events. Although there is very little history but what we do know is that it closed in the early 2,000’s and in November 2009 it was sold.
The main body of the church became a Tesco Express, the Manse became the NFU Mutual whilst the church hall became a restaurant and children’s play area. It’s possible to see some of the original stained glass, although some are hidden behind tins of beans and other products.
Talk about ‘casting out the money lenders’. It’s just very unusual.
