Berkshire, Windsor - St John the Baptist (07)A

St John the Baptist Church, Windsor, Berkshire

It was thought to be in the 12th century that a St John’s church existed, no firm date known. This church continued until 1818 when the decision to demolish and rebuild was taken.

The present church was built between 1820–1822 in the Gothic Revival style. Designed by Charles Hollis, with Jeffry Wyatt (Wyatville) as consultant. Hollis’s plan followed the outline of the old church with many of the old artefacts being incorporated in the new church.

Between 1869-1873 the church was redesigned as a number of features were thought to be out of vogue. Samual Sanders Teoulon was engaged to do the restoration. The extension of the chancel was one of the main objectives. This was completed so that it formed a semi-circular apse. The re-opening of the church in 1873, the opening ceremony performed by Princess Christian (Princess Helena), Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s 5th child.

In the west gallery is a painting of the Last Supper by Francis Cleyn (attrib.), this was restored in 2003.

There is a Royal Pew which shows a pelican feeding its young, the carving by Grinling Gibbons. Both of these items came out of the old church and were donated by King George III in 1788.

There are Venetian glass panels in the reredos, made by Antonio Salviati, mosaic artist. There are eight bells all made at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
