CANADA, Montreal - Notre Dame de Bon-Secours Chapel (01 & 02)

Notre Dame de Bon-Secours Chapel, Montreal, CANADA

Notre Dame de Bon-Secours is a Roman Catholic church and is one of the oldest churches in Montreal, located in the Old Montreal part of the City, address 400 Saint Paul Street East. St. Marguerite Bourgeoys was the first teacher in Ville-Marie she was also founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame. She encouraged the early colonists to build a stone chapel in 1655 and in 1673 she bought a wooden cross from France. The cross named ‘Our Lady of the God of Help’ and the church was completed in 1678. It burnt down in 1754 however the Cross along with the other reliquary were saved from the fire.

The church was rebuilt in 1771. In the 19th century the chapel now called ‘The Sailor’s Church’ because it became the site for pilgrimage by sailors wanting a ‘good help or safe journey’. The Bishop of Montreal, Mgr. Ignace Bourget, gave the chapel a statue of the Virgin as Star of the Sea. In 2005 the mortal remains of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys were interred in the sanctuary.

The Chapel also houses a museum dedicated St. Marguerite. It houses quite a lot of early Montreal history, with artifacts, plus the original foundations of the early church. The spire can also be climbed offering great views of the St. Lawrence and the Old Port. There is also some lovely stained glass windows to see.
