Adult Male Lesser Rhea - Tierra del Fuego, AR
I saw Greater Rheas and Lesser Rheas on my trip to Argentina and Chile. The bird pictured is a young Lesser Rhea and the second photo is an adult male. They remind me a bit of an Emu. They are super unique because multiple females will lay up to 40 eggs in one nest and the male broods the eggs and rears the young, teaching them how to survive. I saw dozens of young chicks following the male parent around and boy can they run fast like ostriches! They can run up to 60 km/hour! I blinked and they were gone!
