Bicknell's Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) - Cape Breton, NS
I could not believe our luck when we had 2 Bicknell's Thrush singing at Money Point on Cape Breton. To see one or hear one at all is very rare for these threatened birds but to have one perched out in the open like this was just mind blowing! Boy we got lucky! These birds are only found in Canada in NB, NS and Quebec. This species has one of the most restricted breeding ranges among the forest birds of North America and winters mostly in the Dominican Republic. This species has declined in Canada by over 40%. They are dramatically affected by habitat loss on their wintering grounds and climate change. I will always treasure these photos and the beautiful hike on the Kauzmann Trail to get to them which was full of stunning Eastern Warblers. There was also good birds like Evening Grosbeaks and Winter Wrens. We had a 4 Catharus Thrush day and on the same day had Veery, Swainson's and Hermit Thrush!
