Red Knot (Calidris canutus) - Grays Harbor, WA
Saw over 500 Red Knots at Bottle Beach. Met some researchers from AK and we found one with a Russian leg tag which was super cool. was the first time I saw so many in breeding plumage like this!
These birds migrate as much as 14,000km each year from AK to South America. Th subspecies "rufa" is listed as a federally threatened species under the United States and endangered by the Gov't of Canada's Endangered Species Act. It is severely climate endangered.
This particular subspecies "Calidris canutus roselaari" that breeds in Russia and AK is listed as Threatened in Canada but not listed in the US.
