Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata) - Smith Island, WA

I love the unique faces of the Tufted Puffins. Did you know you can age puffins by the number of grooves on their upper bills? 1 groove is 1-2 years old, 2 grooves is 3 years and 3 grooves is an adult over 3 years. We saw 20 of these beautiful birds near the colony at Smith Island. As we headed towards Lopez Island we also found 2 surprises a Long-tailed Jaeger and an Ancient Murrelet.
