This guy is Chase; I saw him sitting on the stairs enjoying his coffee as I was walking down Union Square in SF. He looked really nice and was the type of character I was looking for. I found a good place for the shot and I asked him if I can take a shot of him. To my surprise he said of course immediately. In the midst of photographing him, he told me that he works as a security for California Blue Cross down town of SF. Chase was really friendly and photogenic. I took the photography the way it is composed because I wanted a glimpse of the bright street on the background and the man less bright to have a good contrast between the model and the background. What makes this photograph interesting to me is the man’s style of clothing as well as the look on his face and the way he posed. The color of his clothing contrasts really well with the vanilla color of the building in the back. The emotion/feeling I am trying to convey in this photograph is toughness. The man had his arms crossed indicates that he is not someone you would want to mess with. The setting I chose to use to take this shot is of an aperture of f/5.6 because I really wanted the man to be in focus and the background just slightly blurred to give the viewer a sense of place. As a result, I had to dial the shutter to 1/60 to accurately compensate the aperture.
