Old Swan Brewery

The Swan Brewery was established in 1857 (28 years after the first European settlement) in what is now Perth's CBD.

Construction of the brewery buildings in this photograph, on the banks of the Swan River a couple of kilometres downstream, was commenced in 1879. There followed years of amalgamations and takeovers and brewing operations eventually ceased here in 1966.

In 1978 Swan Brewery operations were relocated to an industrial estate in Perth's southern suburbs.

Around 1990 protests erupted around the proposed redevelopment of the brewery buildings. The local aboriginal people claimed it was a sacred site but the developers said that the buildings were on land reclaimed from the river and therefore that claim was invalid.

After a lengthy and at times bitter battle the developers won and the buildings now contain a mix of restaurants, commercial offices and accommodation.

Whether seen from the Swan River or. as in this photo, from the Kings Park scarp above, the Old Swan Brewery is a handsome part of Perth's architectural heritage.
