Mandurah Bridge
12/100x - 2023 Edition - Bridges
This elegant bridge crosses the Estuary at Mandurah (70km south of Perth) and links the Mandurah CBD with the Halls Head area.
It was built between 2016 and 2018 at a cost of $AU52 million.
It replaced the old (adjacent) wooden two lane bridge that opened in 1953 and which was occasionally set on fire during New Year's Eve celebrations (but was never seriously damaged!) The old bridge was demolished after the new bridge opened.
The new bridge was built using the incremental launch method whereby concrete sections are built in a casting yard on one of the banks and when that section is cured, the bridge is inched out over the water. Another section is then cast and so on. See below for more info.
This is particularly impressive considering the bridge is curved on plan. Hats off to the engineers!
The bridge comprises six spans with a total length of 243 metres. It has two lanes each way and an unusually wide pedestrian/cycleway on the northern side.
Beneath each end a curved walkway leads to a fishing platform.
