ALCOs through lion country

In a photo from what feels like a previous lifetime, ALCO YDM4 6394 rolls across the dry Hiran River as it approaches Sasan Gir station with the 52930 Junadgah-Veraval MG passenger. Sasan Gir lies in the middle of the Gir National Forest, a large nature preserve home to approximately 700 lions. The photo was taken from a precarious perch on an abandoned water tower, but at least probably safe from lions....

The nature reserve protects not only the lions, but also the endangered meter gauge railway. Today the line remains one of the last segments of meter gauge in India, and hopefully will remain that way for a while yet.
