Hungarian time machine
Splitting a 4 day trip between Switzerland and Hungary does not seem like a logical plan, and it indeed was not. But at somewhat the last minute I found out that MAV would be hosting a retro event on the scenic Hatvan - Somoskőújfalu line. I had an interrail pass so decided to book a couchette on the Zurich to Budapest overnight train. I came close to not going due to the deteriorating weather forecast, but as you can see here the clouds stayed just south of the scenic northern end of the line. The line was once the main line to Slovakia and features several impressive stations with big yards. Today there is no crossborder traffic and regular trains are operated by small Bzmot railcars. A sporadic freight still runs to serve industries on the north end. Here M62-127 arrives at Kisterenye station in the late evening. Most of the crowd was one station south at Paszto, but was still surprised to have this angle entirely to myself.
