Michelangelo’s David
A symbol of the Florentine civic virtue much prized by the Force, David is depicted as a gangly adolescent, swollen with the pride and strength of youth, but also with some of its hesitancy and fierceness. The idealisation of the head is accompanied by a surprising anatomical accuracy. The relaxed pose is reminiscent of antiquity and expresses the medieval concept of the affinity of the two sides of the body: the right side is closed and protected, the left side open and vulnerable.
