Holywell Bay in a December gale

It's Christmas. Well almost, and what I should be doing is finding suitable presents for my nearest and dearest. Somehow this has involved me acquiring for myself a new pair of fleece lined winter trousers and a hefty carbon fibre Manfrotto tripod, which when fully extended is taller than I am. Although that isn't really very difficult.

The tripod arrived a couple of days ago and I resolved to brave the foul conditions and head for Holywell Bay near Newquay in Cornwall to try and capture some long exposure cloud movement. I figured I'd only need a few seconds and my six stop would do the job.

In the event the tripod was lying on its side before I'd even wrestled the camera out of the bag, blown off its feet by a strong Atlantic blast. Long exposures were clearly going to be off the menu. In fact, staying on my feet was proving challenging at times and the mixture of sand and spray that was flying straight at me across the empty beach meant that handheld shots with regular wipings of the lens was going to be the only thing that might produce a result.

And then, for a few fleeting moments a streak of colour lit the western sky and bounced off the beach in front of me. Winter filth - sometimes you just have to go outside and embrace it.
