Kilchurn Castle

I really struggled on our final location during the recent visit to the Scottish Highlands,. I thought I'd found my spot and then decided against it because I wanted to reflect the entire backdrop into the waters of Loch Awe. When I finally settled on my spot I took my images and left the scene feeling quite happy, only to find the greens, browns and oranges battling one another for anonymity within the composition once I tried to edit the result.

Eventually I got something that I was a bit happier with, sacrificing the rock I'd carefully included within the frame as I went for a slight horizontal crop.

Kilchurn Castle was once the stronghold of the Campbells of Glenorchy, and sits at the top of Loch Awe, close to the A85 road between Tyndrum and Oban. Later on it was used as a garrison during the 2nd and 3rd Jacobite uprisings of the 18th century, The Old Pretender, the New Pretender (Bonnie Prince Charlie to you and me) and all that. Now it stands abandoned, but is another magnet for photographers who are lucky enough to be able to pass some time in this stunningly beautiful part of the British Isles.

There's an irony that I live at the opposite end of Great Britain in Cornwall on the South West Atlantic coast. It snows here once every ten years. Today it has snowed for that once in a decade event, and we've been sent home from work.

The end of three wonderful days behind the camera. Scotland, you know we'll be back.
