Weird Science Project: Humming Rose Bird
Process Statement:
• What creatures did you combine, and what are their natural environments like?
-I decided to combine a basic garden rose and a hummingbird. The rose generally thrives in sunny areas with a water; while the hummingbirds live near areas that have flowers with nectar.
• Why did you combine those creatures?
-My first thought was it would be interesting to combine a flower with an animal that depends on flowers for survival. I remembered that hummingbirds are attracted to red colored flowers and after doing some research I found that they are also attracted to flowers in bright pink shades too; some of the common colors that roses come in.
• What techniques did you use to make your illustration?
-I started off by drawing a sketch and scanning it into the computer, I then opened the drawing in Photoshop and added some color using a mask technique we learned in class and a drawing tablet.
• What was most challenging about this project?
-The most difficult aspect of this project was deciding on which living organisms to combine together and what criteria I should follow.
• What came most easily about this project?
-The easiest (and the most fun) part about this project was creating this hybrid creature and even researching these two organisms.
Criteria:
• Create a hybrid creature using Photoshop or Illustrator
-Photoshop was used in order to complete this creature.
• Choose two of the qualities of a good scientific illustration we outlined in class:
-detail
-simplicity
-negative space
