Boeing 727-2X8Adv (RE)(WL) Super 27 M-STAR Starling Aviation | Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel HAM/EDDH

A stunning Boeing 727, elegant old lady of the skies, M-STAR is seen here landing at EDDH on a crisp winter day. She had been re-engined: the central engine is still an old Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17, but the podded engines are 'newer', more 'efficient', 'less' noisy JT-8D-217, the same found on the MD-80. The apostrophes are there to denote the relative improvement, which by modern standards is still low. The thrust reversers are now of external bucket type, instead of the original internal bucket with jet deflector grills. Only the two outboard engines have reversers, engine No 2 had it removed.

Also for efficiency, winglets have been fitted. Notice the complex triple slotted trailing-edge Fowler flaps, the leading-edge inboard Krüger flaps and outboard slotted slats...this aircraft is a lesson in high-lift devices. These devices are there, because the 727 was built to operate out of small airports and airfields and for trans-continental routes, as opposed to the long-range intercontinental 707. Thus it needed a lots of thrust and abundant lift.
