British Rail electric loco 71003 Ashford Chart Leacon

Withdrawn electric loco 71003 at Chart Leacon during an Open Day. This loco was built at Doncaster Works as E5018 but renumbered to E5003 in 1968 after 10 class 71s had been converted to Class 74. This class of loco was built to run off 650V/750V DC third rail or overhead - overhead wiring was deemed the safe method of working in yards and sidings. I think that overhead was only installed on the old Eastern Section (later the South Eastern Division). There was also a flywheel arrangement for dealing with interruptions in the power supply or short sections of unelectrified track..
