Weekend Extra

What was supposed to be a morning in the Waterville area on Pan Am with my hero T. MIk, followed by an afternoon chase of POED west out of Portland abruptly took a turn when things more or less dried up in Waterville at 1000. Chasing the Hinckley job for what seems like the zillionth time wasn't particularly appealing. After a quick confirmation that my legendary passenger had his border card with him, we decided to bite the bullet and make the 3+ hour drive to McAdam, New Brunswick to try to intercept a rare weekend westbound on Irving's New Brunswick Southern/Eastern Maine Railway. Arriving in McAdam 20 minutes ahead of the train gave us a chance to catch our breath before starting back west. In this shot westbound train #907 is approaching the hot box detector at mile 26.7 as it runs along the North Crooked Brook bog in Eaton. This portion of the Mattawamkeag subdivision was once Maine Central trackage shared with the Canadian Pacific between Mattawamkeag and Vanceboro. As many of the region's railways struggle, it's great to see Irving's traffic continuing to grow.
