La Basilique de Sainte Marie Majeure, située sur le sommet du col Esquilin, est une des quatre Basiliques patriarcales de Rome et est la seule qui ait conservée les structures paléochrétiennes. La tradition veut que fut la Vierge à indiquer et inspirer la construction de sa demeure sur l'Esquilin. En apparaissant dans un rêve au patricien Jean et au pape Liberio, elle demanda la construction d'une église en son honneur, dans un lieu qu'elle aurait miraculeusement indiqué. Le matin du 5 août, le col Esquilin apparut couvert de neige. Le pape traça le périmètre de la nouvelle église et Jean pourvut à son financement.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, located on the summit of the Esquiline Pass, is one of the four patriarchal Basilicas of Rome and is the only one that has preserved the early Christian structures. Tradition has it that the Virgin indicated and inspired the construction of her dwelling on the Esquiline. Appearing in a dream to the patrician John and Pope Liberio, she asked for the construction of a church in her honor, in a place that she miraculously indicated. On the morning of August 5th, the Esquiline Pass appeared covered with snow. The pope drew the perimeter of the new church and John provided for its financing.
