La légende raconte que la nuit du 4 au 5 août 356, la Vierge apparut en rêve au pape saint Libère, ainsi qu'à un riche romain nommé Jean. Elle demanda d'ériger un sanctuaire à un lieu déterminé. Au matin, constatant qu'il avait neigé en plein mois d'août, à l'endroit que la Vierge leur avait indiqué, le pape ordonna de construire la basilique Liberiana de "Santa Maria ad Nives" (« Sainte-Marie-aux-Neiges ») sur la surface enneigée en haut de la colline Esquilin.
Legend has it that the night of August 4 to 5, 356, the Virgin appeared in a dream to Pope Saint Libere, as well as to a rich Roman named Jean. She asked to erect a sanctuary at a certain place. In the morning, seeing that it had snowed in the middle of August, at the place that the Virgin had indicated to them, the Pope ordered the construction of the Liberiana basilica of "Santa Maria ad Nives" ("Santa Maria Neiges ") on the snowy surface at the top of Esquiline Hill.
