East Window
The east window was commissioned by her parents in memory of Sarah d'Avigdor-Goldsmid who was drowned, with a friend, when only 21 yeras old. The symbolism of Death and Resurection is clear. In the lower half Sarah lies dead in the sea with grieving figures looking on [http://www.flickr.com/photos/12608538@N03/4735387047/in/set-72157624361856126/] To the left of Sarah is her mother holding her two daughters; the surviving girl in bright colour and Sarah a pale shadow. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/12608538@N03/4736024650/in/set-72157624361856126/] The buildings of her Somerhill appear to the right, and further to the right Sarah is borne to the shore. Above the red hourse (symbolic of joy for Chagall) carries her to the ladder that leads up to a benevolent and loving Christ figure on the cross, surrounded by angels (look carefully for the angel by his outstretched left hand).
