The gates of Chateau Astros
I thought I'd upload this photo today from my archives as it has a slight Halloweeny look about it what with the splendid wrought iron gates and light/shadows. The history of the land/vineyards attached to the Chateau go back to the 13th Century. During the 19th century the Chateau was built. I quote from the website of the Chateau:
"Having become a national property during the Revolution, it was not until 1802 that the domain fell back into the public domain. Maximin Martin, a rich soapmaker from Marseille, then acquired the land of Astros. His grandson, Marc Maximim Martin, passionate about Italian art, had a majestic castle inspired by Tuscan villas built in 1860. He will bequeath the Astros estate to the grandson of his first cousin Joseph Maurel."
That explains the MM you see at the middle top of the photo.
