Beast Boy #10: The Changeling
It's not long, before I wake up, finding myself trapped in a containment unit. Through the glass, I can see two silhouettes. As my vision clears, ones dressed in a labcoat, while the other man has purple skin, similar in appearance to mine, only purple. They look over at me, noticing I'm awake.
"Ah good, Garfield's awake." The purple man grins, as moves closer to the containment unit I'm in.
"How do you know my name?" I ask, as neither of them seem familiar to me.
"Awh, that hurts. After all the time we've spent together, and you can't even remember your legal guardian, Nicolas Galtry.." He groans, clearly upset for a second before his expression changes back to his usual sick twisted grin.
"No, that's not possible.. You died in prison!" I growl, pounding my fists onto the glass. I try shifting into a gorilla, but something's preventing me from changing. Must be some sort of power dampener. Figures.
"Bunch of lies, spouted to give you a sense of comfort, I suppose. I was close to death, yes. But I never actually died. Doctor Samuel Register here, along with his associates, were able to break me out. Along with bringing you to me." He quickly glances over at Samuel, before looking back at me, still smiling.
"Why am I here Grimace?" I joke, trying to throw him off-balance, and sure enough, it's slightly working. It takes every part of me not to shudder at the sight of this monster. After everything he's done.
"There you go again, joking to mask your pain, but I'll bite. I need you.. More specifically, your blood. Unfortunately Garfield, I'm still dying. Turns out, Sakutia isn't as rare as your parents thought. I have maybe days at best. But now, with this." He pauses, grabbing a syringe, presumably with my blood. "I live to fight another day!" He yells, before injecting himself with the syringe. Miniature scales cover his body, as he shifts into something more animalistic.
"You idiot! We needed to do more tests. I've studied Sakutia far longer than you have!" Doctor Register yells at Galtry. But Nicolas Galtry doesn't respond well to criticism, as he swats the doctor away, sending him flying into the air, soon after crashing into a nearby wall, knocking the doctor unconscious. I notice blood running down my knuckles, as I keep trying to break free.
"There's no need for that, Garfield. After all, we're family now. Even more so than before." Galtry's voice barely audible, as he's more animal than man now.
"I'm not going to let you hurt anyone else. Once I get out of here--"
"Don't you get it?! You're not getting out!"
It's then, that a miracle arrives, in the form of Animal Man. Using the speed of a cheetah, he runs over to me, tapping some keys, the glass walls opening up moments after. He pulls my flip phone out of his pocket.
"You dropped this. Figured something happened, after you left the diner. Sure enough, I was right." He says with a smirk, about to hand it over.
"I'm glad you were.. And can you hold onto it for now? I kind of got some unfinished business to deal with."
"Sure kid. Go get em!" He says, cheering me on. I honestly thought he'd say no. Placing my phone back into his pocket, as Galtry lumbers towards me as a gorilla. Changing into a frog, I leap above him, switching to an elephant. Unfortunately, I'm a little too slow, as he shifts into an armadillo, rolling out-of-the-way just in time. The ceiling starts to collapse, as it wasn't meant to hold an elephant. Animal Man grabs Samuel Register, and runs out, as me and Galtry continue our brawl. I'm able to avoid most of his blows by rapidly shifting into different animals. He starts flying away as a bat, weaving through the falling debris. I follow him as a robin. It isn't long before we're out and onto the streets of San Diego. Thankfully, Animal Man's on crowd control, making sure no citizens get hurt from this brawl. Galtry charges towards me as a mammoth, so I shift into a mammoth, ramming into him with my tusks soon after.
We're at a standstill, almost like a game of tug a war, until I shift into a chimpanzee, climbing onto his head. He tries shaking me off, stomping down the main street as I partially cover his eyes. It's taking him a lot longer to react, mostly as he hasn't trained as much as I have. I can tell I'm wearing him down. Switching to a bear, he's able to swat me off. Before colliding into the wall, I change into a peregrine falcon, accelerating fast enough to stop myself from crashing face first into the wall. Galtry tosses a taxi towards me. Quickly flying through the open window of the taxi, I grab hold of the driver, changing into a gorilla, then proceeding to kick the driver door open, leaping out moments later, making sure I take the brunt of the damage. Landing near a fire hydrant I let the taxi driver go, before running towards Galtry. Animal Man catches the taxi, placing it down slowly on the ground. Me and Galtry rapidly shift, from one animal to the next, trying to counter the other. It's like facing a Marth player in Smash Bros Melee. Almost seemingly impossible, so I have to get clever in using grabs. Getting exhausted, he reverts back to his more humanoid form. Changing into a Sydney Funnel Web Spider, I climb up his arm, and onto his neck, biting into him.
"A Sydney Funnel Web Spider.. You should know what their venom can do. After all, you talked about them quite often.. You should be feeling pretty numb right about now. Hard to think too, isn't it?" I say, as he collapses onto the ground. It won't kill him, thankfully. As much as I want him gone, death's the easy way out. Let's hope this time, he stays locked up.

Months Later
It's been a few months, since the Zookeeper incident. Nicolas Galtry was once again put behind bars, only to die a few weeks later from Sakutia. I guess my blood wasn't enough to save him. The Parliament of Limbs didn't find him worthy to wield the power of the Red, I guess. It took a few weeks, to recover from my injuries. During this time, I managed to get in contact with Tara. At first, she was hesitant to talk about her father's death, which is totally understandable. But I think it helped, that they found the one responsible, Baron Bedlam. He would be put away, and Tara's oldest brother, Gregor, would be named the new King of Markovia. After a conversation with her brother Brion, Tara would leave Markovia. Still having resources, and people who owe me a few favors, I was able to get her set up in San Francisco. She had a lot she still needed to learn of course, but who better than I to show her around? I mean, not knowing what ice cream is, much less what it tastes like? That's a crime against humanity right there. Anyways, the two of us are definitely getting closer, as time goes on. As for Animal Man, I was able to meet his family. His wife Ellen, and his daughter Maxine. Showed me the comics that his son Cliff had made for Tork's side adventures. Not going to lie, it gave me goosebumps at points, and made me tear up. Even though he's no longer here, his stories have had an impact on me. Sure, I'm not really an actor anymore.. But Cliff Baker was a talented young boy. Gone too soon as they say. I'd come with the Baker family one day, to visit Cliff's grave. The goodbyes would come soon after, but I don't regret the time I've spent with Buddy and his family. They've taught me a lot. Whether it's about the Red, or about myself as a person. I'll keep fighting to make this world a better place to live. For the ones that are still here, and for the ones who are no longer with us. Mom, Dad, Rita, I miss you all so much. That won't ever change. But I think, I can finally move forward with my life. As a changeling for good. Is it a cheesy attempt at a pun? Yes, most definitely. But that's me.
"In other news, Jacob Mullin was found murdered in his home earlier today, mauled to death. A key witness reports that she saw former Doom Patrol member Beast Boy, now called Changeling, fleeing the scene late last night. If anyone sees him, do not approach, and call the police. He is considered to be highly dangerous."

And that's all for Volume 1! I hope you all have enjoyed the journey thus far, and will enjoy what I have in the works for Volume 2 and beyond. As always, I appreciate the support you all have given me. :)
