Captain Solar Volume 1, Issue #9: Showing Off
"How did you do that?" Jess asks, bewildered at what just happened. She helps me out by rolling the mugger over, so that he's not directly on me.
"Honestly? I have no idea. I just wanted something to even the odds, and then boom.. Weird glowing white wall and fire hydrant. I guess I can do more than blasting and flying." I say, while getting up off the ground. The train stops, with the doors opening shortly after. Luckily there's no one at this station, so with Jessica's help, I drag the thug with his gun out of the train. We give an anonymous tip call to the police, before taking off.
"Well that was fun! It's nice being able to do normal things again." Jessica says as we leave the station, making our way to her house.
"Yeah, hopefully we can do this again sometime! Oh speaking of.. Would you want to come watch a movie with me and Nathan on Friday night? It's the next movie in the spy movie franchise starring Evelyn Grey."
"I mean, I've probably missed a few movies in the franchise, but as long as it's okay with the parents, sure. So you and Nathan are still friends? That's awesome!" She sounds really into the idea, which isn't too surprising after she's been gone doing who knows what for these last couple of years.
"Surprisingly yes. He somehow hasn't gotten sick of me." We stop at the cross walk, waiting for the light to change.
"Andy.. You're too hard on yourself sometimes.. You're great, and anyone would be lucky to have you as their friend." She replies, trying to reassure me. A couple of minutes later, we arrive at her house.
"It was great to hangout and be able to talk about everything. It's been tough with this secret identity thing, having no one to talk to. So thanks for that Jess." I say as she walks up the first few steps to her house, before stopping, and turning around to look at me.
"Of course! It's nice being your confidant of sorts. You've grown so much in these past few years, and I'm sure if Davina were here now, she'd be so proud of you. Anyways, I better go, see you at school tomorrow!"
"See ya later, alligator!" I reply in a joking matter. She tiptoes down the steps towards me, leans over, and kisses me on the cheek before going back up and into her house. I can feel myself blushing as I walk away, into the streets of the Drag district, making my way home. It's been a pretty great day, all things considered. I reach into my pocket, to check what time it is, as I wait at the crosswalk. 10:15 pm. I wonder if my parents have gotten home or not. I start walking, but my hand glows, so I look up, and barely step back in time before the truck in the intersection barrels on through, not paying attention.
"Do you have a death wish or something?" The older man in the truck yells, as he speeds by. It's more like he's not paying any attention to the fact the cross walk light was on. But what can you really do about it? Not much unfortunately. Eventually I'm able to pass through and get home.
"Hey, anyone home?" I ask, upon entering the house, and taking my shoes off.
"Oh hey Andy, we're both home now. Where were you anyway?"
"I was just hanging out with Jessica. Sorry, I totally forgot to leave a note."
"But Jessica-'s"
I interrupt him mid sentence saying
"She's alive dad. You haven't seen the news?"
"No.. No I haven't. This is wonderful news! Where has she been all this time?"
"I didn't really ask, but she was rescued this afternoon by a superhero."
"Her parents must be so relieved!"
"Yeah, probably.. Hey I'm pretty out of it, so I think I'm gonna hit the sack early." I say, as I make my way towards my room.
"Alrighty then, have a good night son." My dad replies, as he goes into his room. I can hear him and mom talking, but as I close the door, the noise dissipates. Placing my phone on my bedside table, I plug the charger in, as my phone's dead. So I guess I don't know everything about my powers.. Also, what did that kiss mean? Was it a thanks for saving me kind of kiss, or was it something more? There I was, blushing like a little school girl over a kiss on the cheek. Does that make me pathetic? I honestly can't say for sure one way or the other. But man that was fun, summoning that wall and fire hydrant. Soon enough, it all goes black, as I fall into a deep sleep.

I wake up to the sound of my phone alarm going off. Reaching my left arm over, I turn off my alarm, and get up, wiping my eyes. I take a few minutes to get changed, before walking upstairs to make myself some breakfast. As I look through the pantry, there isn't much in the way of cereal to choose from, so I go to the fridge, and get myself a couple of eggs. It takes me about 10 minutes to make myself a nice breakfast sandwich. Upon finishing my breakfast, I go to play a new JRPG game I got for the Vita.
"Kirumi noo. Why'd you have to go and say you'll be back? After a full on confession too. You may as well sign your death certificate now.. You were supposed to bring peace to the nation!" I cry out, as I'm reading the subtitles. Looking at my watch, I realize that it's time to go. I put away my Vita, before putting my backpack on and going to the washroom to brush my teeth. Brushing my teeth really quickly, I grab my shoes and put them on, before walking out the door. The streets of Cardinal City are bustling, as the people are moving to wherever it is they are going. In classic Andrew Livingston fashion, I use my flying shortcut, after lifting off in an alleyway. Navigating my way to school, I see the occasional person look up at me and wave. I being the nice guy that I am, wave back, before carrying on. I almost hit some billboard signs due to me being distracted, but at the last second I swerve out-of-the-way. A few minutes later, I arrive at Northdale, landing in the nearby alley. I walk out of it, and I hear a familiar voice calling me.
"Andrew! Heyy man! You into dumpster diving or something?" Nathan asks, as he runs up to me, with a confused look on his face. Odd question..
"Dumpster diving? Huh? Ohhh, I was just tying my shoes over here so I wouldn't get in the way of everyone walking."
"Smart! I was just kidding anyway. Let's get going. Don't want to miss first period. P.E!"
"Yeah, for sure." I reply as we move across the street to the school campus. I notice Jasper Whitaker and his friends walk by us, as we enter the school. Jasper, Cassandra, Lyle, Riley, and Gerardo. Those 5 do everything together. It's like fate brought them together or something. I see Malia Jensen chatting away with the popular kids at her locker as I walk by. It's hard to hear myself think with all the different conversations going on. Finally arriving at my locker, I spin the dial to each number, before it unlocks. I grab my gym bag, and put away my backpack. The bell rings, as I rush to the gymnasium.
Me and Nate make small talk as we change into our gym clothes, before walking out of the change room, and into the gymnasium. I lean against the wall on the right side of the gymnasium, as I wait for everyone to get changed. Soon enough, the students file through into the gymnasium, sitting down in the middle of the room. We start off the class with laps around the gym. I run at a reasonable pace, not trying to overexert myself, but also not wanting to be last. Once that fun is over, we get split into two teams for basketball. Before the game starts, Chase Atlantic starts talking smack to different players on the same time as me. Chase Atlantic, the son of a fisherman. Who would've known he would become one of the biggest athletes in the school.. Once the jump ball starts, Chase has possession of the ball. I'm trying to stay on him, but all of a sudden I trip over my own shoelaces. He dribbles the ball over to our net, and shoots. It bounces off the backboard, and comes towards me. Before I could react, it magically floated into the net to score.. Wait what? Is he a special or something? Being open with his abilities.. Isn't he worried people will catch on? I notice Chase high-five his teammates as they go back to their side of the court. If only my powers were more subtle.. Then this game could get more interesting.
