Stone village
This ancient mountain settlement, named Alpe Cortenero, has been originally built by using the stones rolled from the adjacent mountainside, nothing has been carried up from the valley below. It is dated back to the XVIII Century and stands at an elevation of 2.036m (6,680ft).
Some buildings are well preserved, and are still used to watch over livestock, some have collapsed under the weight of small avalanches, and one has been completely restored in 2004 to serve as a small mountain refuge (the hut on the left).
Normally it takes a couple of hours to hike up here from the small village named Mondelli, near the more famous touristic center of Macugnaga.
In the backdrop the summits of Pizzo Tignaga and Punta Moriana, still covered by snow.
Questo antico insediamento montano, chiamato Alpe Cortenero, fu interamente costruito con le pietre rotolate dal fianco della montagna adiacente senza trasportare materiale dal fondo valle. Risale al XVIII secolo e si trova ad un'altitudine di 2.036m.
Alcuni edifici sono ben conservati e sono ancora usati per sorvegliare il bestiame, alcuni sono crollati sotto il peso delle piccole valanghe, e uno è stato completamente restaurato nel 2004 per servire da piccolo rifugio (la baita a sinistra).
Normalmente ci vogliono un paio d'ore per arrivare qui dal piccolo villaggio di Mondelli, vicino al più famoso centro turistico di Macugnaga.
