SEETHAKALI

PLZ visit album "Seethakali"

Seethakali - a unique centuries-old folk art form. The revived art "Seethakali", which was almost extinct 35 years ago and the revived was again first staged in 2017.The art form has an interesting social significance - people from under privileged section of the society were prohibited from depicting gods and goddesses during that period - Seethakali gave them an opportunity to dress up vibrantly. Seethakali was played by those belonging to communities like Pulyar, Vedar etc in their Kavu( adobe) and Kalari( arena) . Perianad is famous for the Channar revolt- Maarumarakkal Samaram (Protest to cover the upper body) or Channar Lahala (Channar Revolt) that began in the early 19th century, when women from the Channar caste (now identified as Nadar, an OBC community) who had converted to Christianity sought to cover the breasts-a right only Hindu upper caste women were allowed to exercise. It was also here in Perinad, that the Nair Community and the Pulaya community confronted for months. It is at this place that Seethakali became popular. It also helped to ease the prevailing the stressful atmosphere. It is believed that the art form became more popular during the reformation period in Kerala. There are people who remember having seen this play being staged at Kallada Big Mosque for two years in the past.

The play is based on the epic Ramayana and episodes taken from Kamba Ramayanam and adhyatma ramayanam.
