WHAT DID JONI DO ON HER FLORIDA VACATION? - #13 of 16.

[CONTINUED FROM #12] . . . . During the course of Joni's conversation with James, he revealed that he was a retired "snowbird" from a specific town with which Joni had some familiarity in Nassau County on Long Island. It was his custom in recent years to come down to Florida in November and stay until the end of March, usually only returning north for the Christmas Holidays. In Florida, he stayed in a small condominium which he owned in a nearby town which was just west of I-95. He indicated that he came to the beach in Fort Lauderdale usually a couple of times a week, weather permitting. He also played some golf. He also revealed that he was a widower and had been one for several years. He had a daughter living back in New York, who usually flew down to visit him a few times each year, but she had not done so this year due to concerns about the covid pandemic. For her part, Joni advised James that she was also a retiree and a former New Jersey resident who had recently relocated to South Carolina and was vacationing in Fort Lauderdale with his wife for the week.

In fact, shortly after Joni had arrived on the beach and settled in her chair, Joni's wife had walked by the beach on the sidewalk and she and Joni exchanged waves. James saw the waving, but wasn't sure who the woman was who had waved to Joni. Joni advised James that the woman was in fact her wife. Interestingly, Joni's wife told her later that she had walked by the beach a second time while Joni was engrossed in her book and noticed that there was a guy sitting near Joni who was apparently checking her out. She specifically asked Joni if that guy ever said anything to her while she was on the beach. . . . Joni responded with a shameless understatement. "Well actually, [my dear], that guy did talk to me . . . for a few minutes . . . "

In truth, Joni and James stood side by side in the shallow surf for approximately 40 minutes and engaged in a wide ranging discussion that touched upon a number of topics, including the covid pandemic and vaccinations, spring break, and the fortunes and status of New York's various professional sports teams, among other things. It should be noted that James spoke with a distinct "New Yawk" accent, which Joni enjoyed hearing on a Florida beach. One thing that wasn't discussed was the subject of age. During the conversation, Joni detected a few tidbits that led her to suspect that James was actually a few years younger than she was. It's always reassuring as a woman to know that she can still attract a younger male!

Another thing that wasn't discussed was politics. Being that James was a resident of Nassau County in New York, a Republican stronghold, Joni realized there was a distinct likelihood that James was a card-carrying Republican, and perhaps even worse, a Trumper! In fairness to James, he never said anything that would have suggested he was a Republican, let alone a Trump supporter, and Joni wasn't going to open up that potential can of worms. As far as Joni is concerned, James is innocent until proven guilty. Furthermore, why ruin a perfectly pleasant conversation with a handsome guy by raising the specter of Trump?

And James was handsome. . . . in a rugged sort of way. He was probably about 5'11' tall and possessed the remnants of an athletic physique, which is to say that he was a little paunchy in the middle. However, he still had his full head of brown hair. Like Joni, James grew up in a large Irish Catholic family. As such, he was naturally fair skinned and only moderately tanned, considering he had spent the winter in Florida; a circumstance which he attributed to his use of strong sunblock. Because James wore dark sunglasses, Joni couldn't tell what color his eyes were, . . . but they looked blue!

Furthermore, as anyone who has ever visited Disney World probably knows, "It's a Small World After All". It developed during the conversation that Joni and James had visited some of the same gay bars and clubs in NYC and on "Lonk Island". Both were familiar with the TG organization and business known as "Femme Fever", run by a woman widely known as "Karen". For many years, Karen has sponsored large monthly TG parties at various locations on Long Island. In fact, she will continue to do so once the pandemic ebbs. Joni had travelled from New Jersey and attended a few of those parties over the years and James, who admitted he was an ardent admirer of TG women, had also attended some of those parties. So it came as no surprise that Joni and James knew some of the same TG women living on Long Island, many of whom on occasion had also wandered across the Hudson River to New Jersey to attend the weekly Saturday night soirees at "Amanda's Hideaway", where Joni was a semi-regular for many years until its demise in 2019.

Indeed, because James was an admitted admirer of TG women, Joni was compelled to inquire about James' . . . . [TO BE CONTINUED]
