The Lochan at the Fairy Glen, Near Uig, Isle of Skye
I have given permission for this shot to be used on the website www.scotlandthemovie.com/movies/stardust2.html Scotland the Movie is a great website showing a host of movie locations in Scotland. This movie location at The Fairy Glen, Isle of Skye, was used in the 2007 fantasy/romance film Stardust starring (amongst others) Charlie Cox, Michelle Pfeifer, Sienna Miller, Robert De Niro, Peter O'Toole, David Walliams, Ricky Gervaise and many other well-known names. You should check out both the website and the film.
This view of the Fairy Glen is a reworking of an original posting in 2009. The photo shows the little lochan and what I describe as a butte. There is a tiny figure on top of the flat-topped hilly feature, which wasn't anywhere in evidence when we walked up to it? Could this have been one of the mythical faeries?
The Faerie or Fairy Glen, is an area of otherworldly appearance, located close to Uig in the northwest of the beautiful Isle of Skye. It is a quiet place, except for bleating sheep, and is often described as fairy-like, yet relaxing. It is wild and far out, covered with something in the region of over 360 strangely shaped little conical hills. It is a pleasant natural spot with more than a hint of mystery. The hills are erosional features and geologists say that the distinctive landforms have been caused by a large landslips similar to the ones responsible for other parts of Skye’s unique topography e.g. the larger-scale Quiraing Area.
The area of the Fairy Glen is reported to be more than 15,000 square metres and contains numerous small, conical-shaped hillocks rising 2 - 10 metres in height. These hillocks are overgrown with thick, green turfy grass, are covered with bleating sheep and were carpeted by strange yellow mushrooms of unknown power and use. There is a burn running through the glen, and there is a lovely little lochan. On the side of one of the slopes is a small cosmic spiral of stones, overgrown with grass. According to local legend, girls who dance naked on the spiral will have their dearest wishes fulfilled... or perhaps that should read: if girls dance naked around the spiral, local shepherds will have their dearest wishes fulfilled?
