Fire Station in Manhattan, NYC
Another archive shot from our three-day trip to New York City in 2010. I liked the fireman enjoying his coffee. I'm not sure what "Hook and Ladder 24" means?
Thanks for the info Ali. Checking on the net there are lot of Hook and Ladder firestations dating from way back. Another old firestation, Hook and Ladder no 8 is the quirky half-of-an-old firestation, which appeared in Ghostbusters (look for video on youtube). Hook and Ladder No 8 was one of the many old stations that were threatened with closure by the highly unpopopular NYC Mayor Blomberg!
STOP PRESS
Hook and Ladder 24 is a historic Fire Station located in Manhattan, NYC at 115 West 38th Street. In checking its location I came across details of an incident that the station’s fire-crews had been involved in, that seemed eerily reminiscent of the later Twin Towers horror. On July 28th 1945, a US Army B-25 bomber, lost in thick fog crashed into the North Side of the Empire State Building, 915 feet above the street. The 78th and 79th floors were engulfed in blazing fuel and 14 people were killed (3 crew and 11 office workers) and 26 people were injured. It was one of the first major incidents where firemen communicated using the new short-wave radios, essential as telephone communications were down in parts of the building. If you google it, you can find the details in a fascinating New York Fire-service publication: ‘Fire Department City of New York (Fdny) the Bravest: An Illustrated History.’
