The Czech Brigade or the Check Brigade ?

These guys fron the Czech Republic attended a Jacobite re-enactment earlier this year. The Battle of Prestonpans (1745) was a living history exhibit. complete with musket-fire, cannons, swords and bayonets galore. Here a party from the Czech Republic were camped out in the park. You may be asking what do these guys from Moravia (near Brno) have to do with Bonnie Prince Charlie and the failed rebellion of 1745? Well they represent the Czech connection with Montgomeries Highland Regiment. In the 1620s a body of 2,000 Scottish mercenaries from the Lothians went to fight for Fredrick V, King of Bohemia in the Palatinate’s cause. The original 77th Montgomerie Regiment was formed in 1757 to fight in the French/Indian Wars in North America under Colonel Montgomerie. In the past up to 15 Czech Jacobite enthusiasts have travelled to the UK for these enactments. They were a very authentic-looking bunch of Highland soldiers and a nice bunch of guys
