A View Into the El Teide Volcanic Caldera

This is taken from a viewpoint in El Teide National Park, Tenerife. The scale of this volcanic collapse feature is immense. The crater is 48 km (30 miles) across and this popular view point (where coaches and cars, can park) is at around 2000m (6500 ft) above sea-level (See my earlier panoramic shot for a slightly better idea of the scale). The dark speck that can be seen just above the cliffs that mark one of the sides of the volcanic crater, is a bird of prey. There are three volcanic peaks, Pico Viejo (still active) Montana Blanca and Mount Teide which soars to 3718 m (almost 12,200 ft) above sea-level. This is the third largest volano in the world by volume, just smaller than Hawaiii's Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea and it really is worth visiting.
